About Serhii Ksonzenko

Serhii Ksonzenko is the founder of US Directory, which ranks local service businesses using an open methodology. He writes about how to check a contractor before you hire one.

Why I started US Directory

I've been starting and running businesses for 20 years. Over that time, I've hired a lot of builders and repair crews. Some missed the deadlines we agreed on. Some did poor work. A few took the money and disappeared.

After enough of that, I stopped trusting what a website or an ad promised. I started looking for ways to check a contractor before hiring one. Much of what you need is public: licenses, complaints, disciplinary records. But it's spread across state and county websites, and few people know where to look.

US Directory is my attempt to bring those records together and rank businesses by them, not by who pays.

How I work

I build the ranking method in the open. Friends with backgrounds in mathematics and in business review it and suggest changes, and I publish what changes and why. You can read the current methodology and the principles behind it.

In my articles, I link every fact to its source: a statute, a government search, or our own data, with the date we checked it. If you find a mistake, our corrections page explains how to report it.

I'm not a lawyer or a licensed contractor. When I write about the law, I quote the statute, link to it, and say when you should ask a professional.
